Moving Checklist: An 8-Week Countdown That Actually Works

About 12 million US households move in a typical year (Census Current Population Survey). Most of the stress doesn't come from the boxes. It comes from things remembered too late: the mover who isn't available, the internet that can't be installed for two weeks, the deposit you forgot to ask about.

This countdown spreads the work out so nothing lands on the last weekend.

8 weeks out

☐ Set a moving budget (movers or truck, supplies, deposits, overlap rent, travel)
☐ Get at least three written quotes from movers (see how to choose a moving company)
☐ If you rent, check your lease for the notice-to-vacate deadline
☐ Start a folder (paper or digital) for quotes, receipts and the new lease or closing papers

6 weeks out

☐ Book the mover or truck and get the confirmation in writing
☐ Ask schools for records; ask doctors and vets for copies or transfers
☐ Declutter one room per weekend: sell, donate, recycle
☐ Order boxes, tape and labels

4 weeks out

☐ File your USPS change of address (see the change-of-address checklist)
☐ Schedule utilities: stop dates at the old place, start dates at the new one
☐ Start packing rarely used rooms using a room-by-room packing list

2 weeks out

☐ Confirm the mover's date, arrival window and payment method
☐ Book elevator or parking permits if needed
☐ Use up frozen food; plan simple meals
☐ Refill prescriptions

Moving week

☐ Pack your open-first box and a personal bag
☐ Defrost the freezer, if it is moving
☐ Clean and photograph the old place (move-out checklist)
☐ Keep valuables, documents and medications with you, not on the truck

Moving day

☐ Walk the crew through what goes and what stays
☐ Read the inventory and bill of lading before you sign
☐ Final walk-through of every closet and cabinet
☐ Take meter readings and photos
